UK-based footwear brand Helen Kirkum Studio has moved shoe production to Portugal, enabling it to reduce prices and increase comfort in its Palimpsest collection (pictured), made from upcycled materials from old shoes and deadstock.
Ms Kirkum won the inaugural Cordwainers’ National Footwear Student of the Year Award in 2014 while completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Northampton.
She went on to study for a master’s at the London College of Fashion and then worked for adidas in Germany before returning to London to set up her own studio.
She said: “We aim to reconnect people with the craftsmanship and tactility of products that have been lost through mass production.”
She has added three new colourways to the Palimpsest range and, working with the Portuguese factory, the design has been adjusted to improve comfort.
Ms Kirkum has been nominated for Accessories Designer Of The Year 2024 by the British Fashion Council. Winners will be announced at the Fashion Awards in London in December.
