College of Biomass Science and Engineering in Sichuan University has a long history, originating from the Department of Leather Engineering in Yanjing University in 1921. During the development of the College, Food Chemical Engineering was established in 1954 and Chemical Fiber Engineering was established in 1958 (the earliest chemical fiber related subject in China). In 1988, Fashion Design and Engineering was founded, and the Biotechnology in Light Industry was established in 2004.

Today, College of Biomass Science and Engineering is one of the strongest colleges in Sichuan University and has more than 150 faculty members and staffs. There are four sectors in the College including Department of Biomass and Leather Engineering, Department of Food Science and Engineering, Department of Fashion and Apparel Design, and Textile Research Institute. The College is also built on several leading research centers including National Engineering Laboratory for Clean Technology of Leather Manufacture, Key Laboratory of Leather Chemistry and Engineering of Ministry of Education, and Synthetic Leather Research Center. In last two years, the College is also the leader in creating the first-class discipline group of Advanced Light Industry Technology and Environmental Protection and the peak discipline of Light Industry Technology and Engineering in China.
