The slaughter of chickens fell by 1.8% and that of cattle and pigs rose by 4.7% and 7.2%, respectively, in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period of the previous year, according to preliminary results from Statistics of Livestock Production, released by the IBGE.

Preliminary government data show that the number of cattle slaughtered in the quarter was 6.91 million, while swine slaughter recorded 13.64 million and chicken slaughter 1.54 billion head.

Cattle slaughter also grew by 0.1% compared to the 4th quarter of 2021. In the first quarter of this year, preliminary results point to a production of 1.82 million tons of carcasses, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2021, but a reduction of 4.5% compared to the last quarter of the same year.

The survey also shows that tanneries that tan at least 5,000 whole units of raw bovine hide per year reported receiving 7.08 million whole pieces of rawhide in the first quarter of this year. This amount was 0.2% lower compared to the same period in 2021 and 1.9% lower than that recorded in the last quarter of last year.
